Captain Henry Stanley Scales
Henry Stanley Scales was born on 6 September 1896 at 15 Upper Garville Avenue, Rathmines, Dublin, the third of four children of civil servant Richard Nathaniel Scales and his wife Edith (nee Radbourne). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living with his parents, siblings and an aunt at 5 Annesley Park, Dublin.
Scales enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 7 and 23 August 1915 (No.1716 – later Corps of Hussars No.71518). During 1916 or early 1917 he embarked for France, where he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st or 2nd North Irish Horse Regiments.
Soon after, however, Scales applied for a commission in the infantry, and after a period of officer cadet training, on 31 October 1917 was appointed as a 2nd lieutenant and posted to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Whether he saw service overseas as an officer is not known at present, but it seem probable.
Following the end of hostilities, Scales was demobilised and on 1 September 1921 relinquished his commission.
On 8 January 1925 he married Dorothy Isabel Aylward at York Street Congregational Church, Dublin.
On 28 October 1924 Scales was again commissioned, as a 2nd lieutenant in the Territorial Army, with the Portora Royal School (Junior Division) OTC, Enniskillen. On 1 November 1937 he was promoted to captain and given command of the Portora contingent. He was awarded an Efficiency Decoration on 4 August 1942.
Scales died at the North Western Hospital in London on 13 February 1960.
